Five Arkansas State pole vaulters turned in outstanding performances at last week's Pole Vault Summit meet.

Freshman Michelle Legatt smashed her own school record for the third time this indoor season as she jumped 12-7.

Legatt of St. Joseph, Minn., had already met the NCAA provisional qualifying height at a meet in Lexington, Ky., a week ago.

Another freshman, Sara Gresham of Crossett, improved her standing by vaulting 11-4 in the Summit meet.

She previously jumped 10-11 3/4.

On the men's side, junior Brad Tyler jumped 17-2. Tyler, also from Crossett, was an NCAA provisional qualifier for both the indoor and outdoor meet last year.
Teammates Gustavo Rehder of Sao Paulo, Brazil, jumped 16-6, while Jeb Gooding of Gnadenhutten, Ohio, finished with 16-1.

ASU will host the ASU Invitational in the Convocation Center Jan. 27. The first event gets underway at 11:30 a.m.

Women's rugby club opens practice for spring semester

By Dustin Dearman, Herald Staff

Padless uniforms, scrum caps, sports bras and a desire to play are the essential elements for building a women's rugby club.

With a squad of 15 players the Lady Indian Rugby Club has already made a name for themselves by defeating the University of Arkansas last fall.

Rugby is a physical game with all of the roughness of football, strategy of soccer and an atmosphere of pure excitement.

The object of this intense game is to score as many points as possible by scoring a try for five points (similar to a touchdown) or by kicking the ball between the goal posts for two points (like a field goal).

But, it is the head-bashing, bone-crushing action that attracts many to this sport.

The Rugby Club is headed by its president, Joany Doran, a freshman early childhood elementary education major of Bryant; vice-president, Vikki Jones, a sophomore photojournalism major of Bryant; and treasurer, Heather Decker, a junior journalism major of Rogers.

The women's rugby club is up and running on full throttle.

Its schedule includes a rematch against Arkansas on March 10, Western Kentucky, Vanderbilt, and an April tournament in Oklahoma.

For anyone who wants to join the women's rugby club all that is required is to show up to practices.

Practices take place from 4:30 to 6:00 p.m. on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday on either Kay's field behind the library or in the combat room of the HPESS complex.
