Lady Indians roll to easy win in exhibition home opener

By Luke Lovins, Herald Staff

ASU's game plan is to jam it down their opponent's throat inside. They executed well but often could not finish.

"I thought our positioning was good. I thought our shot selection was good. I think the thing that was most disappointing was we just didn't finish a lot of shots," Head Coach Brian Boyer said.

The game plan still managed to work against Williams Baptist Wednesday night at the Convocation Center in an exhibition contest.

The Lady Indians won 80-38 and scored as many points inside as Williams did from the whole floor.

Williams' front court was no match for the outstanding play of junior forward Jolie McKeirnan.

McKeirnan led the team in rebounding last year with 8.8 rebounds per game and was second on the team in points per game with 11.4.

In the game, McKeirnan went 6-14 from the field with 19 points and 12 rebounds.

In the first half, the rest of the Lady Indians, led by Rae-Anne Smith who was 5-9 from the field and 2-3 behind the arc, scored 33 points to build a commanding 47-18 lead at halftime.

McKeirnan led the Indians, who dominated the boards, with eight of the Tribe's 30 first half rebounds.

The Indians complimented their inside game nicely by shooting 50 percent from three-point range in the first half and 41.7 percent for the entire game behind the arc.

In the second half the Indians cruised, and added 33 more points to end the game with the 42 point win over Williams Baptist.

McKeirnan cooled off in the second half going 2-6 from the field and added another free throw.

The Lady Indians did a good job defensively forcing Williams Baptist to shoot just 17.9 percent from the field.

Boyer was pleased with his play but says his team has a lot to work on.

"We certainly did a lot of positives, but by no means are we perfect. There is a lot of things that we can now go back and show on tape and correct and keeping getting better," Boyer said.
