Several students at Arkansas State University are concerned about sexual harassment policies and how sexual harassment cases are handled. Andrea Smalec, Student Government Association president, organized a task force to examine ASU's sexual harassment policies to find out how they could be improved. Students' concerns of this issue were taken into account. The task force came up with seven recommendations to improve it and ways to make students aware of sexual harassment and its ramifications. One of the biggest problems concerning this issue is the lack of publicity of the policy. Students don't know how to handle sexual harassment if faced with it and several don't know the present policy or what their rights are. It's important that the proposed recommendations are passed, especially the seventh one: increased publication of the policy by putting it in the Course Catalogue, the ASU factbook and ASU's Web site. Let's hope that the SGA senators, student affairs personnel and the President's Council make the right decisions to better serve the student body. |
